Hale Center Theatre: 9 to 5

When it premiered in theaters in 1980, the comedy film 9 to 5 worked as an effective rallying cry against lingering workplace sexism. Has the world changed so little that there’s still satisfaction to be found in workplace drones striking back at the management that keeps them down?

Dolly Parton served up a generous helping of new songs to accompany the title hit that anchored the original film, turning the story of three office secretaries—Violet, Doralee and brand-new employee Judy—into a 2009 Broadway musical. When all three women realize that their boss is trouble for female workers, they come up with a unique plot for revenge.

As has become almost typical for Hale Centre Theatre productions, this one pushes the technical crew to its limits; in this case, a new track system was required to allow for speedy set changes on the theater-in-the-round stage. What a way to make a living. (Scott Renshaw)
