Sharon Van Etten, Tennis

“There are things I don’t allow myself to feel, because they’re negative and putting negative energy out there is never a good thing,” Sharon Van Etten told City Weekly in an interview earlier this year. “But if you don’t direct it at somebody, I’m realizing, it can be positive and productive.” She spoke of her plugged-in rocker Tramp (produced by Aaron Dessner, singer/guitarist for The National), for which she tapped into her more basic instincts and shook off the folk label she’s been plagued with. Her mesmerizing voice also caught popular attention on the interweb when she teamed up with Shearwater to cover “Stop Draggin’ My Heart Around” for A.V. Club’s “Undercover” series—a song warranting hitting repeat several times over. Tennis will open.
