Hulk Alter You

Superheroes have become part of our cultural symbolism, and nowhere near more than characters transformed by radiation or chemicals. The experimental film Hulk Alter You! by Los Angeles artists Edgar Arceneaux and Kurt Forman is a “mashup” of three movies of that sci-fi subgenre: Altered States, The Incredible Hulk and Youth Without Youth.

Their cross-pollination of images from the three films allows viewers to delve into the deeper intimations of the traumatic fantasies of the post-nuclear age, as well as the way these images have been adapted and marketed for mass consumption. What has the myth of superpowers done to our perception of the “human”?

The screening of Hulk Alter You! at the Salt Lake City Main Library is part of the superHUMAN exhibition presented by the Central Utah Art Center in Ephraim. Although the Central Utah Art Center is being evicted by the city, the exhibit will stay up till Aug. 3. After the screening, the artists will hold a Q&A session. (Brian Staker)
