Country Joe McDonald's Tribute To Woody Guthrie

Folk-protest pioneer and voice of the American worker Woody Guthrie would have turned 100 this past July 14. This year, thousands of folks around the country will blow out the candles in memory of the “This Land Is Your Land” balladeer and composer of thousands more songs. The largest such gathering, the Woody Guthrie Centennial Celebration Concert at the Kennedy Center, will include luminaries old and new—from Jackson Browne to Old Crow Medicine Show, John Mellencamp to Dropkick Murphys. But prolific musician Country Joe McDonald, influenced early in childhood by Guthrie, has been paying tribute to the troubadour for over 40 years. He even earned praise from Billy Bragg: “Like no one of his generation, Country Joe McDonald carries on the mission of Woody Guthrie.” In concert, McDonald performs his favorite Guthrie tunes and also weaves in excerpts from Guthrie’s autobiography, novel and The Daily Worker column.
