Punch Brothers

Mandolin player Chris Thile—formerly of Nickel Creek, currently with Punch Brothers—recently found one more link between him and his mentor, Edgar Meyer: Meyer won the MacArthur Fellowship—commonly called the “genius grant”—in 2002; Thile won in 2012. This is what the MacArthur Foundation says about Thile: “Through his adventurous, multifaceted artistry as both a composer and performer with various ensembles, Thile is creating a distinctly American canon for the mandolin and a new musical aesthetic for performers and audiences alike.” The guy deserves it. So, what will the 31-year-old composer/musician do with the no-strings-attached $500,000 grant? Thile told Paste that he hopes to gather a group of “the best fucking musicians ever” to create music that is free from the binds of genres, expectations and preconceived notions. “I also think I might get a mandolin,” Thile added, laughing. The Milk Carton Kids will also perform.
