Fiona Apple

Fiona Apple’s haunting, piano-driven debut, Tidal, was the ’90s album that launched a thousand lesser angsty piano songstresses; her angry, guitar-and-drums-heavy follow-up When the Pawn... was less commercially successful but resonated with critics and sullen girls everywhere. Apple’s first album in seven years, The Idler Wheel..., often eschews traditional instrumentation, layering Apple’s gorgeous melodies with experimental vocals, thigh slaps, screaming schoolchildren and factory sounds. We’re not sure how all this will translate into a live show, but as long as Apple brings her pipes, her feelings and a piano, we’re there. (Rachel Piper)
