The heavy-hitting Kenshin Taiko Drummers will fill Liberty Park with Japanese culture and tons of energy as part of free concert series Mondays in the Park. The local group of international musicians will perform taiko, which means “big/fat drum.” This is a modern style of classic Japanese drum performance that is influenced by ancient Japan and American jazz. The local drumming group has been performing in Salt Lake City since 2008 and offers lessons to those interested in the art of Japanese drumming.
The group will be followed by slam poet Karen Neverland before continuing the Japanese cultural education with Okinawa Kenjinkai, a traditional Japanese dance and music group that aims to build understanding between American and Japanese cultures through art.
The Mondays in the Park Concert Series was started in 1987 as a collaboration between Excellence in the Community and Utah Arts & Museums. The music and dance performances highlight local ethnic and folk communities that represent various cultures around the world. (Savannah Turk)
