The Grand Theatre: La Cage Aux Folles

It might seem impossible to contemplate that the story goes back 40 years, but that’s when La Cage aux Folles was born—ages before serious conversations about “alternative families” were even being contemplated in the United States. But Jean Poiret’s 1973 play gave birth to a 1978 French film adaptation, which gave birth to a 1983 American stage musical and a 1996 American film adaptation. It’s the outrageous farce that keeps on giving. The Grand Theatre presents its production of that 1983 musical version, with the book by Harvey Fierstein and songs by the legendary Jerry Herman (Hello, Dolly!). The story centers on two gay men running a drag cabaret, whose son has just announced that he’s going to be married. But when the future in-laws come to visit—the very conservative future in-laws—it’s time for some major pretending to help keep their lifestyle under wraps. (Scott Renshaw)
