For Porter Robinson, the terms used to describe his genre—electro, dubstep, etc.—didn’t quite encompass his own sound, so he christened an entirely new genre: “complextro.” In fall 2011, his EP Spitfire reached the No. 1 spot on the iTunes Dance chart and the same on Beatport’s overall release chart. His music not only works on the dance floor, but also for intense first-person shooter games or the trailer for Michael Bay’s next explosion-heavy film. Oh, and Robinson’s only 19 years old.
