Wilco, Blitzen Trapper

What do the washed-up, poppy Sting from my childhood and alt-rocking Wilco of my adulthood have in common? According to Nitsuh Abebe’s essay “Indie Grown-ups” in New York Magazine in October 2011, both could be considered that loathsome label “adult contemporary.” Wilco, along with Feist and even Radiohead, Abebe pronounced, offer the hallmarks of our parents’ beloved radio music: good, but predictable and inevitably to be consumed like Frappuccino NPR Muzak by the bourgeoisie. Damn it, we do become our fathers, don’t we? Regardless, Wilco’s The Whole Love (2011) still offered something resembling experimentation with its bookend tunes and a whole lotta shining moments from its players. “Adult contemporary” or not, I’m still sold. Blitzen Trapper starts things off.
