Graffiti6, Yuna

England ain’t got the soul pedigree of America’s Motown or Stax, or the wide swath of soulmen (most folks associate British soul with the country’s ladies: Adele, Amy Winehouse, Joss Stone, etc.). However, a few smooth male crooners named Jamie are making a name for themselves. There’s the beat-boxing Jamie Lidell and the smoother Jamie Scott, whose Abercrombie & Fitch good looks front the funky Graffiti6. But behind the beauty—and the tenor—of Graffiti6 is beatmaker/producer Tommy Danvers, who crafts sick, soulful numbers that are full of glam but are a little rough around the edges—in all the right ways. Together, the duo wrote Colours, released in 2010 in the U.K. and re-released in 2012 in the United States after Graffiti6 signed to Capitol Records. That breathed life into former singles “Annie You Save Me” and “Stare Into the Sun,” but the focus has been on breakaway “Free,” which could very well be the perfect sound for this summer. Yuna opens the show.
