Motion City Soundtrack, The Henry Clay People

It’s hard not to acknowledge the sonic similarities between The Henry Clay People of Glendale, Calif., and The Thermals of Portland, Ore. Both bands offer fervent and fuzzy rock tunes that afford ample headbanging and fist pumping. But with The Henry Clay People, there are also strains, albeit to a lesser degree, of Built to Spill and Meat Puppets, while they unabashedly wear their strident punk-rock upbringings on their musical sleeves. On 2008’s Live, they even cover two Operation Ivy tunes. Looking back on their youth and wondering what the hell is going to happen next is the quarter-life quandary that this four-piece contemplates—but with biting humor—on their upcoming Twenty-Five For the Rest of Our Lives. Motion City Soundtrack headlines; The Front Bottoms start things off.
