35th Annual Asian Festival

In 1977, as Southeast Asian refugees streamed in and were re-settling in Utah, the local Chinese, Japanese and Korean communities in Utah joined forces with the goal of creating a cultural event that would educate Utah’s non-Asian population and provide an occasion for community pride. Now, 35 years later, that initial collaboration—the first-ever multicultural festival in the state—has expanded to include Asian and Pacific Islander groups featuring Utahns who can trace their ethnic heritage to as many as 15 different countries.

Returning to its now-regular home at the South Towne Expo Center in Sandy, the Asian Festival offers a variety of entertainment showcases, including the annual “Asian Got Talent” competition, traditional dance, drumming and more. Vendors will feature authentic crafts from their cultures—including handcrafted Japanese kites—while others sell delicious food spanning the cuisines of Asia. As always, special activities for children are also available. And admission is free. (Scott Renshaw)
