Hale Centre Theatre: The Sound of Music

Plenty of ideas sound great on paper, but flop in the execution. Then there are ideas that seem ridiculous, yet somehow become classics. After all, who would imagine that the recipe for one of the most beloved musicals of all time would include nuns, Nazis, a bunch of precocious kids, narrow escapes and turning the mundane task of learning the musical scale into a showstopper?

Rodgers and Hammerstein’s The Sound of Music has been delighting audiences for more than 50 years, from the original Tony Award-winning Broadway production to the classic film. It’s still a joy to watch the frisky young postulant Maria bring life to the family of the widowed Captain von Trapp and his strictly raised children. And where most musicals offer a couple of familiar favorites and plenty of lesser-known filler, The Sound of Music plays like a Broadway greatest-hits performance all on its own: “Do Re Mi,” “Climb Ev’ry Mountain,” “Edelweiss,” “Sixteen Going on Seventeen,” the title song and more.
