The Donkeys

The San Diego four-piece unabashedly wears the stripes of their Southern California forebears on their sunny 12-track album, Born With Stripes, as if they were, um, born with them. In the spacey grooves (note: this is not chillwave, but rock & roll feng shui) there are hints of the Grateful Dead and Flying Burrito Brothers, and the tunes also are reminiscent of the sounds of the Byrds and Buffalo Springfield. But on this, their second release, they’ve also elicited a post-Slanted & Enchanted Pavement aura—just listen to “Ceiling Tan.” And just when they pick up the pace like those ’90s rock greats, they settle back into a groove that shows off their finest asset, which isn’t their regional-music studies, but rather their sense of ease. Advance Base and The Poorwills open the show.
