Greg Laswell, Elizabeth Ziman

With his music sitting somewhere between other mellowed troubadours like William Fitzsimmons and Jay Brannan, Greg Laswell’s music isn’t reminiscent of hip-hop. But Laswell says that he was listening to a lot of it during the two years between Take a Bow (2010) and Landline (2012), and it influenced him to include an array of female vocalists. And he enlisted singers such as Sia (“Dragging You Around”), Sara Bareilles (“Come Back Down”), and his wife, Ingrid Michaelson (“Landline”). The latter song is about having to use a landline telephone during the three weeks that Laswell recorded the album in an isolated house in Maine. He says the slowdown helped put him in a good headspace to create his finest of three records to date.
