Amanda Padoan: Book Signing

As readers of Jon Krakauer’s best-selling Into Thin Air are already aware, high-altitude mountaineering can be a life-threatening adventure. Veteran alpinist and journalist Amanda Padoan recounts another fateful expedition—one that took the lives of 11 climbers in August 2008 on K2—in her new nonfiction book, Buried in the Sky.

Yet Buried in the Sky is not merely a story of a tragedy. While Padoan recounts the events that led to a daring rescue by Chhiring Dorje Sherpa of his fellow sherpa Pasang Lama during that deadly expedition, she also explores the biography of these two men, as well as the culture of sherpa, turning these often anonymous guides into fully realized people.

In a special event sponsored by The King’s English Bookshop, Padoan will read from her book, accompanied by Chhiring as well as another survivor of the expedition, Dr. Eric Meyer. (Scott Renshaw)
