Of Monsters and Men, Yellow Ostrich

Propulsive horns begin the epic journey of five adventurers in a mythical land. Their movements are guided by tambourines, and their protector—a kaleidoscopic demi-god hatched out of a meteor—launches energy orbs at beasts in time to the punctuating “Heys” in the uplifting, undeniably catchy “Little Talks,” the first single from My Head Is an Animal. The Icelandic sextet Of Monsters & Men, aided by director Mihai Wilson (WeWereMonkeys), made an epic, motion-comic music video, but most of their small repertoire, encompassing one EP and this 2012 full-length release, is epic-sounding. The interplay between singers Nanna Bryndís Hilmarsdóttir and Ragnar “Raggi” órhallsson on “Little Talks” exudes a communal Edward Sharpe & the Magnetic Zeros affect, and the meticulously crafted, slick arrangements warrant comparisons to Arcade Fire. Yellow Ostrich opens the show.
