Yet the 1965 musical is not just about the fanciful wanderings of Don Quixote de La Mancha, the aging gentleman whose passionate support of the concept of chivalry drives him to re-fashion himself as a questing knight. It is about the author Miguel de Cervantes, in prison awaiting trial before the Spanish Inquisition and trying to save his work-in-progress from destruction at the hands of his fellow prisoners. The play-within-the-play becomes its own rousing defense of the notion that embracing a romantic ideal can be braver than facing reality.
As Pioneer Theatre Company artistic director Charles Morey directs the final show of his farewell season, it’s a wonderful opportunity to remember the many dreams he turned into realities on this stage. (Scott Renshaw)
