Les Enfants Terribles

The “point & shoot” camera, with its simple operation, is the preferred camera for souvenir photos and pictures shot on vacation—perhaps impromptu, not overly composed, but captivating in the way they snag a moment, incandescent as a firefly, out of thin air. The work of 15 photographers from all over the country has been collected in a print exchange by San Jose, Calif.-based artist Jai Tanju, in a show that examines vistas both rural and country, a kind of travelogue through snapshots. In an age of sophisticated cell-phone cameras, the point & shoot camera might be becoming an endangered species, but its versatility and variety are given full flight here.

A store named Fresh seems like the ideal location for this kind of show. In the past, the store has hosted exhibitions of art rendered on such “street” media as table-tennis paddles. (Brian Staker)
