Pygmalion Productions: In the Next Room (or, the vibrator play)

The Victorian Era is well known for its prudish ways. It was also considered to be a very romantic period, filled with mysticism and scientific experimentation amid a Western culture deep in the throes of growing pains.

Celebrated playwright Sarah Ruhl decided to delve into one of the most mythic Victorian health inventions with her Tony Award-winning play In the Next Room (or, the vibrator play). Ruhl’s provocative theatrical production follows the career of Dr. Givings and his use of an electrified device to combat what was commonly referred to as “female hysteria.” The tension of the work is found in the contradiction in women who were supposed to curtail all sexual urges and cravings, but were then specifically told by a pseudo-medical establishment that to heal themselves properly they must reach orgasm, often, with the help of a physician and his new-fangled device.
