Viva Frida!

Frida Kahlo said, “I leave you my portrait so that you will have my presence all the days and nights that I am away from you.” As the premier Mexican artist of the 20th century, her portraits are unforgettable, if not haunting (no unibrow jokes, please). Known for her combination of surrealism and symbolism, she explored the territory of her native upbringing, while reaching beyond to international scope and influence, leaving her indelible portrait on modern art.

Exhibited in museums such as the Louvre and the Tate Modern, Kahlo’s work is gracing the state of Utah for a brief moment as part of a special education and community event sponsored by Weber State University and the Hispanic Area Council, which also features art from local high school students. Free to the public, an open house will include entertainment, refreshments and enlightening discussion of Kahlo’s popular and enduring legacy. (Dallas Robbins)
