Trampled by Turtles, Brown Bird

“Midnight on the Interstate,” the opening track from Trampled by Turtles’ 2012 release Star & Satellites, starts with somber plucking and Dave Simonett singing as if he were crying at the moon—it’s a far howl from the rampant gutbucket jams of the band’s past, and what makes their live show so damned good. And just when you might have lost hope that the new material is all slow ballads—truth be told, it primarily is—the quintet picks it up on “Risk,” then again on “Sorry” and “Don’t Look Down,” showing that their fiery fingers can still unroll breakdown upon breakdown. Brown Bird opens the show.
