Dark Horse Company Theatre: Chicago

John Kander and Fred Ebb created musicals about such nonprototypically Broadway subjects as the rise of the Nazis in Berlin (Cabaret) and odd-couple dynamics in a Latin American prison (Kiss of the Spider Woman). Yet nowhere was their uniquely cynical take on musical theater more arrestingly prescient than in their 1975 hit Chicago--inspiration for the 2002 Best Picture Oscar winner of the same name--presented this month by Dark Horse Company Theatre.

Set in Prohibition-era Chicago, it follows the story of two women--Velma and Roxie--who turn murder into an opportunity to play the system, thanks to the assistance of cynical attorney Billy Flynn. The musical numbers include multiple show-stoppers--“Cell Block Tango,” “When You're Good to Mama,” “All That Jazz”--but the appeal of Chicago transcends many of the traditional feel-good elements that have anchored Broadway's most enduring shows. Instead, it's a glimpse at infamy turned into celebrity before it became a common part of reality-show pop culture. (Scott Renshaw)
