There are a couple of gritty rock and R&B-infused tracks off of Dirty Radio, Sallie Ford & the Sound Outside’s debut album that could have easily been placed in a ’90s-era Tarantino flick—especially “I Swear” and “Against the Law.” And there are also rockabilly jukes (“Cage”) that deserve to live in a jukebox in a grimy, woodsy dive bar like hidden gems. The band and the album certainly have a “dirty little secret” vibe—better than Alabama Shakes, with less hype and less bombastic oeuvre. The album is punchy and has the sweat and soul of America’s heartland, although the quintet hails from Portland, Ore., where they were anointed 2010 best new band by Willamette Week. Secret’s out, I suppose. Deer Tick is the headliner.
