Hale Centre Theatre: Father of the Bride

Spencer Tracy first brought the flustered protagonist of Edward Streeter’s novel to the movies in 1950; Steve Martin took on the role more than 40 years later. But the fact that both versions found a satisfied audience speaks volumes to the timelessness of Father of the Bride, and the many interpretations that can find both its humor and its heart.

Hale Centre Theatre sets its version in the 1950s, still focusing on Stanley Banks as he deals with the hubbub surrounding the impending wedding of his daughter, Kay. The money for the ceremony and surrounding events seems to be flowing faster than tears; will Stanley be able to enjoy the blessed occasion while fretting over his finances?

The Hale Centre Theatre’s theater-in-the-round setup has proven to be wonderful for big, bold productions. Come see how the gentle comedy and emotions of this story fare with the lack of a proscenium. (Scott Renshaw)
