Washed Out

Atlanta-based songwriter and producer Ernest Greene—aka Washed Out—is a prime example of an artist coming to popularity under the scrutiny of the Internet but doing it on his own terms. Widely adored for his bedroom-produced debut EP, Life of Leisure (2009), with its nostalgic, breezy, introspective sonic palette, Washed Out used a veneer of samples to create the effect. Then, he waited. He waited to decide the new direction for his first full-length, and it turned out to be nine emotional, visceral tracks that were composed organically—no samples—with the intent they be played live, which Greene now accomplishes as a touring five-piece. Call it “hypnagogic pop” or “chillwave” or whatever you like, the 2011 release Within & Without—produced by Ben Allen, who produced Animal Collective’s breakthrough Merriweather Post Pavilion—is nothing short of dreamy. Sup Pop labelmates Memoryhouse opens the show.
