Dreams have been an endless well for artistic fodder since time immemorial. Psychologist Carl Jung documented their importance to the collective unconscious—what he might say artists tap in to—in Man & His Symbols. And dreams are the things that Spanish-French musician Anthony Gonzalez of M83 mined as he wrote the epic two-disc Hurry Up, We’re Dreaming—about “how every [dream and dreamer] is different, how you dream differently when you’re a kid, a teenager or an adult,” he told Spin. “I’m really proud of it. If you’re doing a very long album, all the songs need to be different, and I think I’ve done that with this one.” And the album slipped into the Web’s collective conscious. According to music aggregator The Hype Machine, out of the Top 50 Albums of 2011—sourced from 403 bloggers’ personal Top 10 lists and weighted according to ranking—M83’s landed at No. 3. I Break Horses opens the show.
