Salt City Derby Girls: Bomber Babes vs. Sisters of No Mercy

BANKED TRACK ROLLER DERBY In March 2011, original Utah roller-derby league Salt City Derby Girls announced that they were leaving flat concrete behind and going old-school banked track. Then 13 months passed. There’s a reason there are only a handful of banked-track derby leagues across the country, as opposed to the hundreds of flat-track organizations: It’s a huge undertaking, a do-it-yourself sports build unlike, say, a taxpayer-supported soccer stadium. Buying a banked track costs thousands of dollars, and then you have to assemble it in a space large enough to accommodate an audience on bleachers—not to mention a landing space for skaters getting hip-checked over the rails (it happens). As seen in the 2009 flick Whip It (which was loosely based on Austin, Texas’ pioneering TXRD league), banked-track play is faster, harder and slightly more dangerous than flat—more NASCAR than pinewood derby.
