David Rees: How to Sharpen Pencils

David Rees is a man of many talents. Though you may know him as a Huffington Post contributor, or as the author of the Bush-era comic Get Your War On, you may not know that he is also the nation’s premier artisanal pencil sharpener. To cure you of your ignorance of the great tradition that is artisanal pencil sharpening, he has written a book on the subject.

How to Sharpen Pencils is your guide to the fine art of pencil sharpening, and on Rees’ website, he offers his bespoke pencil-sharpening services for the bargain price of $15 (plus shipping and handling)—I promise this is not a joke. In a world of locavore food and DIY beekeeping, Rees has made it his mission to offer his craftsmanship to well-dressed people with an excess of discretionary income.

You can witness his pencil-sharpening skills for yourself at a special event at Weller Book Works in Trolley Square. (Rob Tennant)
