Utah Cultural Celebration Center: Renewal

Taking used, novel and interesting objects that have been discarded and reusing them is not only recycling, but also a very popular form of art called assemblage art, the aim of which is to gather objects that are unrelated and assemble them in a unified work of art with a new, encompassing idea. Renewal: Finding New Life Through Art at the Utah Cultural Celebration Center is a tribute to assemblage art that showcases its diversity and complexity.

Renewal features nine talented, popular assemblage artists from the local community: Brian Christensen, Adam Larsen, Suzanne Larson, Marianne Cone, Amy Adams, Frank McEntire, Zane Anderson, Reclaimed Sentiment and Jason Lanegan. Further, nine local writers were each asked to write a piece that reflects an artist’s work to accompany that artist’s collection. Each piece is an indicator of the distinctive quality of the individual artist’s aesthetic. Assemblage art transcends the mere act of compilation and requires something personal.

Jason Lanegan’s work is an iconic approach to assemblage art and features a very personal self-expression as he uses wit and visual metaphor in art with a unique sense of humor. “Butcher Shop” (pictured) and his other prominent piece in the show are what he calls reliquaries. The reliquary is constructed and houses “relics” such as a shaving knife, a plastic chicken, a black-and-white photo of a cow, a toy truck and a small sheep among numerous other curiosities. The piece is not serious—and like assemblage art in general, is a free flow of pure creativity, imagination and personal expression. (Ehren Clark)
