DJ Shadow

There’s rarely a need to quote other critics in these pages, but in his scathing review of Josh Davis’—aka DJ Shadow—most recent album, The Less You Know, the Better, Ian Cohen of Pitchfork sums it up perfectly: “[It] can’t even be staunchly retro, or staunchly anything. Its only commitment is to a subtle antagonism, and it ignores pretty much any worthwhile development in pop, rock, electronic or hip-hop music since the turn of the century.” While the crate-digging perfectionist DJ Shadow will probably never re-create the magic of Endtroducing, here’s hoping he can dazzle a live crowd with enough pretty lights and onstage wizardry to distract them from the disasters of his latest album, which not even many all-star guests—Tom Vek, Little Dragon, Talib Kweli, Posdnuos and more—could save.
