Band of Skulls are headlining this show, and their album Sweet Sour is one of the top 2012 releases thus far, but do yourself a favor and get to the show early. The powerful strumming and mighty vocals of the Brooklyn, N.Y.-based We Are Augustines created an evocative performance that blew me away at the ASCAP Music Cafe during the 2012 Sundance Film Festival. Songs like “Rise Ye Sunken Ships” and “Strange Days” were as explosive as unplugged tunes can get. Frontman Billy McCarthy said “Juarez” was written about the Mexican border town, which has a tumultuous environment that touched him. In fact, it’s often a difficult task for musicians to find the same emotions that came out when they wrote a particular song, but McCarthy just nailed it throughout the 30-minute set, pulling the audience in and not relenting.
