Fanfarlo’s second album, Rooms Filled with Light, diverges from the London-based folk-pop band’s debut, Reservoir. It features electrified strumming rather than the sounds of mandolins and glockenspiels, and there are plenty of samplers and synths. The subject matter has shifted from library-inspired to delving into science—viruses, asteroids and mass extinctions. “Replicate,” for instance, is about how microbes infiltrate bodies. This new electro-dance meandering manages to be catchy, but like a slow-growing illness. Singer/writer Simon Balthazar has stated that the title nods to how the record was produced, as well as its intended effect: like a flash going off to illuminate a space. Gardens & Villa open the show.
