Paul Winter: Iron Within

The red rocks of Utah’s national parks in the southern part of the state are infused with iron—they gets their ruddy color from the same iron as our blood. Emerging artist Paul Winter reveals the reddish hues of these landscapes in his somewhat abstract, yet dynamic, oil paintings. But it’s not just about the color red; Winter uses the entire spectrum to depict the metaphorical lifeblood that runs through this region, even when it seems relatively barren—the life force both within and baring its blush without.

His Fresh Flow series takes on the Rasta Chutes of Snowbird from scenes that serve as the backdrop of skiing and snowboarding, no less alive, and you expect an extreme skier to come crashing through the canvas at any moment. At the same time, there is a sereneness and placidity here, that of life in repose. (Brian Staker)
