For a twosome—Nicole Barille (guitar and vox) and Sam Meister (drums)—Mr. Gnome sure as hell makes a lot of noise. One of the most eardrum-obliterating concerts that I saw in 2011, Mr. Gnome plays a set that dances around various genres within rock music. Following up 2011’s Madness in Miniature, the Cleveland-based band is supporting a digital 7-inch, which features “The Way” and “Still Life,” songs that show more restraint and precision than previous work. But Mr. Gnome’s specialty is fuzzy, musical tapestries, hallucinogenic interludes and pounding rhythms—the perfect witch’s brew for Halloween.
