Mike Doughty

“So, I wrote a book called The Book of Drugs. It’s largely about drugs. There’s also a lot about the weirdness, and messed-up-ness, of life in Soul Coughing,” Mike Doughty wrote on his website He’s assuredly a better writer than a publicist. The Book of Drugs was released January 2012, and it is a candid, brutally honest account of Doughty’s hatred toward his old bandmates, the highs and lows of drug addiction, and all the odd stories of everything between sex and scandal in the world of rock & roll, all without teetering on the trite. That’s because Doughty, who has written for Village Voice, New York Press and more, is an engaging writer who grips his audience. Same for his live show, which, on this tour, features him playing his brand of literate, coffee-shop rock, reading excerpts from the book and conducting an audience Q&A. The State Room, 638 S. State, 8 p.m., $17
