Thunder Over Utah Air Show

Fighters over Dixie sounds like some kind of hybrid modern-day/Civil War re-enactment, but it’s actually a much more spellbinding spectacle in the sky. St. George constructed a new airport in 2011, and the site is the showcase of the Thunder Over Utah Air Show, featuring the U.S. Navy Blue Angels in their first-ever visit to southern Utah. The quartet of F/A-18 Hornets is known for their jaw-droppingly precise aerial maneuvers in tight formation.

The Blue Angels aren’t all there is to this show; it’s a two-day exhibition of aeronautics including other military aircraft, such as the F-22 Raptor and the P-51D Mustang—renowned for its battle-worthiness in World War II—as well as a World War II battle re-enactment with armored vehicles, and Southern-style wingwalker Carol Pilon. It’s a celebration of the human urge to take to the air. If you’re planning on attending, check ahead on hotel reservations, as accommodations are already filling up. (Brian Staker)
