Dark Horse Company Theatre: Ring of Fire

“Jukebox” musicals are always a tricky proposition, walking the fine line between mere pop-culture nostalgia and the demands of a stage show to create something visual and able to tell a compelling story. Ring of Fire winds its way through that minefield by turning the music of Johnny Cash into a production that’s not exactly a biography, but more than a simple musical revue.

As created by Richard Maltby Jr., Ring of Fire is described as a combination of music, multimedia and spoken word, exploring the life of an aspiring singer through economic hardship and tragedy. While Johnny Cash himself isn’t the named protagonist, the essence of his life emerges through 39 of his best-known songs—from “Folsom Prison Blues” and “I Walk the Line” to the iconic title song—as well as the way his music touched on larger themes of heartbreak and longing. Experience a unique evening of classics by the Man in Black. (Scott Renshaw)
