“13-piece Indie Orchestra Seeks Harpist” was the headline for a feature I wrote about Typhoon in summer 2011. Put that in the classifieds—I love it. This Portland, Ore.-based “Noah’s Ark of bands” has reached critical mass, yet they are still willing to expand under the right circumstances. And what is striking about Typhoon is that if said harpist joined the band, she wouldn’t noodle along in a cacophony of sound, for Typhoon’s musicians practice note-making restraint to add perfectly timed flourishes to a song. Led by Kyle Morton, the band released A New Kind of House EP in 2011, the lyrics of which dip slightly into the esoteric but, at face value, deal with coming to grips with life’s realities—sickness, death and so on. Typhoon also opened for The Decemberists on a limited run soon after, making 2011 a year as big as the band itself. Motopony and The Hive Dwellers provide support. Kilby Court, 741 S.
