The Aggrolites

Although their sound is often labeled “dirty reggae”—also the title of their rock-solid debut—The Aggrolites play a smooth style of early reggae circa ’69 to ’71 the way it was meant to be played. The clean syncopation and chill riddims come across on their fifth studio release and Young Cub Records debut, Rugged Road, which has a sticky, gritty feel from the analogue recordings. Although each song was recorded in one take, the five-piece’s album still shows a mastery of sound manipulation as captured by engineer Craig “DubFader” Welsch (John Brown’s Body, 10 Ft. Ganja Plant, Slightly Stoopid). That feel lends itself to an old-school, basement-party vibe, especially heard on the shout-out heavy “The Aggro Band Plays On.” Mike Pinto Band and Wasnatch open the show.
