The Chicago-based Umphrey’s McGee is known for their jamming, but unlike many a group of self-indulgent noodlers, they create articulate, genre-bending jams onstage with an array of signals. A tap on the head means to jam back into a song, while a sign to “milk the teat” means to keep the improv going. With special onstage mics, the six members can also talk to one another so one can take the compositional lead on a jam (which they call Jimmy Stewarts) into a certain chord progression or key signature—whatever they think will engage the audience. Because, after all, it’s all for the fans, as the band has demonstrated over its 15-year career. Recently, they played their first all-cover show—as picked by the fans—on Feb. 2, and, on tours past, they have allowed fans to pick the genres that they jam in, creating mash-ups of epic proportions. Jimkata will open the show. The Depot, 400 W. South Temple, 8 p.m., $17.50 in advance, $20 day of show
