Busdriver

The syllable alchemist Regan John Farquhar shows self-restraint from his normal dizzying pace of rhyming on Beaus$Eros, his latest album as Busdriver. The slowed-down verbal tempo is in sync with the album’s “post-hip-hop” experimentation, including a transition to diverse beats mosaic-ed together by producer Loden backing Busdriver’s frequent singing, rather than rapping, of his vulnerable, self-loathing word graffiti. But his courage and willingness to bend the genre that he’s been scraping in since he was 13—a span of over 20 years—makes it a fun listen. And this new sonic divergence comes on the heels of several of Farquhar’s new projects: In 2010, he began a DIY punk and experimental pop group, Physical Forms, with Jeff Byron, and in 2011 he began collaborating with rapper Flash Bang Grenada.
