When grand-scale musical-theater productions hit Utah stages, we're accustomed to them being Broadway productions that make the rounds of larger cities before finally making their way to the Rocky Mountains. But Hale Centre Theatre doesn't play second fiddle--or in this case, flamenco guitar--to anyone.
Zorro: The Musical makes its U.S. premiere after emerging from London's West End, where writer Helen Edmundson teamed up with writer and lyricist Stephen Clark and the music of the Grammy Award-winning Gipsy Kings to adapt the “prequel” story written by Isabel Allende. It tells how Don Diego de la Vega, wealthy son of a California landowner, is inspired after witnessing injustice to adopt a heroic masked alter-ego--one who leaves the sign of the “Z” as a warning to others.
Those unfamiliar with Hale Centre productions can expect a unique experience--theater-in-the-round combined with dynamic production values. Flames, flying and other magical stagecraft take this familiar tale places it hasn't been before. (Scott Renshaw)
