SOJA

SOJA’s first album released on Dave Matthews’ ATO Records was modeled after Bob Marley’s Survival, in that Strength to Survive offers a big sound—Survival was Marley’s first album recorded by utilizing a 32-track board—and messages of hope and independence. Plus, it was the album that truly inspired SOJA frontman Jacob Hemphill—the son of a defense contractor, of all things—to venture into the roots-reggae medium while he was in high school. While Marley’s effort was thematic around Zimbabwe’s rise against oppression, Hemphill meditates on a more personal—while simultaneously worldly—peace. The album also offers an infectious array of grooves and big dub sounds. Anuhea is also on the bill. Tuesday 2.28 @ The Depot, 400 W. South Temple, 7:30 p.m., $20 in advance, $25 day of show
