In the oft-fractured world of hip-hop, one local-by-way-of-Las-Vegas evening of entertainment’s goal is unity. Launched by LV’s HighDro in 2008, the long-running night has expanded to other prominent Western cities. Now in its fourth month locally, Hip Hop Roots features headliners Toki Wright, a Minneapolis rapper with content-filled rhymes about community and culture, and local rapper Burnell Washburn, whose Utah-centric lyrics paint familiar scenery. The event also brings together an open mic, live painting, fire spinning, munchies and a swarm of other local MCs. (Savannah Turk)
