CWMA Showcase: Ryan Tanner, Holy Water Buffalo, Fictionist

The earthy songcraft of Ryan Tanner will get this fine showcase off to a songwriterly start. The troubadour is widely known as part of several bigger projects, but his solo work had traction of late: He won the grand prize in American Songwriter magazine’s nationwide lyric contest, and he followed that up with the Seven Years EP. The Heber sons Holy Water Buffalo play enough that if you haven’t seen these boys, you’re probably hiding under a rock—or are not a fan of straight-up, no-frills rock. Quite possibly, the biggest news in Utah music came this year from Provo-based five-piece Fictionist: The atmospheric-rock band signed a contract with Atlantic Records in September, and will release a five-song EP in 2012. And the announcement came just months after their final-four finish in Rolling Stone’s “Do You Wanna Be a Rock & Roll Star” contest. The State Room, 638 S. State, 9 p.m., $5
