CWMA Showcase: The 321s, Palace of Buddies, Max Pain & the Groovies

One of the pleasures of gathering Utah’s Top 25 bands is creating exposure for brand-new acts, such as the sugary, retro pop of the female-fronted The 321s. Their tunes are all about love (finding, looking for, losing, etc.), and this band, which formed in March 2011, is hard not to love. On the opposite side of the spectrum, Palace of Buddies have shown an almost unparalleled level of onstage maturation and charisma over the past year as they’ve supported their long-awaited sophomore effort, Summertimes. Max Pain & the Groovies, a band that provokes dance-floor juking and body gyrating in the same vein as 2010 CWMA winners Spell Talk, round out the evening. Max Pain released a Halloween-themed EP in October, and followed it up in November with their first full-length album, Tortilla Gold, which was, as the name implies, sumptuous and shiny.
