CWMA Showcase: David Williams, The Poorwills, Grey Fiction

Experimental rockers Grey Fiction are feeling good, fresh off winning Velour’s semiannual Battle of the Bands in mid-December. Since, the brothers’ band has been touring the West—including a jaunt this February from which they’re driving back to Utah on their day off to play this gig. Local troubadour David Williams got all cinematic this year: He was the focus of a documentary film, Intro—nominated for Best International Documentary in the Torino Film Festival—and he scored his first film, The Parade, which debuted at the Salt Lake City Film Festival in August 2011. The Poorwills is a band that was born at the 2010 CWMA showcase at The Woodshed as a backing band for frontman Glade Sowards. They play gentle acoustic songs paired with four-part Beach Boy-esque harmonies, as heard on Drinks on the Wing, released in 2011. The Woodshed, 60 E. 800 South, 10 p.m., $5
