[CW A&E Pick] The works that Red Butte Garden’s curator Jodi Rusho chose to include in the new exhibit Nature of Sustainable Art don’t necessarily belong in the same camp as Duchamp’s urinal piece, “Fountain,” but the use of readymade, castoffs and found items does share some parallels in vision.
All the pieces, whether usable like a table, or a more pure object d’art, are initially generated from ecological, repurposed or everyday materials. “This year, I have focused on the different paths of sustainability that artists use,” says Rusho. “For example, not just using recycled material, but also including materials that are produced locally and in a sustainable way. My goal is to expand the vision of what sustainability is and can be, to broaden the cycle from not just postconsumer, but complete cycle sustainability.”
With that directive, she has invited artists who work with a wide variety of materials and mediums, even porcelain. (Jacob Stringer) Nature of Sustainable Art @ Red Butte Garden, 300 Wakara Way, 801-585-0556, Jan. 6-Feb. 26, free with garden admission, $6-$8. RedButteGarden.org
